déjà vu memories: PARKS|PLAZAS|PROMENADES

in every generic city there are a series of parks, plazas and promenades all meant to serve as a means of public space unique to that specific city, its history, and its present developments

“the generic city is not held together by an over-demanding public realm”… “but by the residual”

in the original model of the moderns the residual was merely green but in the generic city the vegetal is transformed into

the EDENIC RESIDUE: a hybrid of politics and landscape (PARKS|PLAZAS|PROMENADES)

PARK| la sants

in reality these public spaces all become comparable to previously visited parks, plazas and promenades that people move through independent of a destination

PLAZA| plaça de catalunya

they arrive at these destinations and feel as though they are embracing the culture but in reality what they are feeling is this notion of general memories, a déjà vu memory ultimately condensing the entire past in a single complex

people come to gather at this plaza for it is known to be the center of Barcelona, but once reaching this destination they sit around take pictures for just a few moments realizing that they feel familiar with it and then go to stores which anchor the plaza and seem more attractive than the historical landmark

PROMENADE| las ramblas

in every one of these destinations the same and only activity occurs: shopping so instead of embracing a city so heavily embedded in culture and history people continue the déjàvu and shop

a place where people from around the world recognize the name of and come to walk down the busy streets of because they believe it is the essence of Barcelona when in actuality it is just another promenade with shopping as the main activity
